Hosted by Salt Trails Philly
Description (from host)
The Thread is a temporary public activation to hold space for grief and connectivity. Visitors to the installation in Philadelphia are invited to use the disconnected rotary phone to “call” their lost loved ones.
The opening ceremony will take place on Sat., July 20th from 10:00 – 11:30 AM at Vernon Park. The event will include live music, community art creation, storytelling, and the opportunity to engage with the phone. This event is hosted in partnership with Salt Trails Philly, a collective of grief workers in Philadelphia.
The project was developed in response to the grief across our community. Whether because of deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, gun violence, or the opioid crisis, or absences due to incarceration, illness, or disability, our collective grief needs a place to be witnessed. The installation features a disconnected rotary phone that invites people to “call” anyone that is unreachable to them, from parents to pets — essentially those who you are yearning to reconnect with, but cannot. This year’s installation also features a community mosaic that visitors can help to create, by adding a coin in honor of a loved one.
